About this compound
Humanin is a 21-amino acid mitochondria-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 16S ribosomal RNA gene of the mitochondrial genome. It was first identified in 2001 through its ability to rescue neurons from Alzheimer's disease-related cellular death. As a mitochondria-derived signaling peptide, Humanin interacts with multiple cell surface receptors — including gp130, FPRL1, and IL-27R — and activates downstream pro-survival pathways such as JAK/STAT3, PI3K/Akt, and MAPK. Preclinical research has investigated Humanin for its cytoprotective, anti-apoptotic, and metabolic effects, with studies spanning neurodegeneration, cardiovascular protection, metabolic syndrome, and age-related cellular decline.
Storage and handling
Store at -20°C lyophilized, away from moisture and UV light. Keep vials sealed until use. Stable for 2+ years in a non-frost-free freezer.

- Neuronal protection studies demonstrated that Humanin potently inhibited apoptosis in cortical neurons exposed to amyloid-beta oligomers and other Alzheimer's disease-related insults, suggesting a role in neuronal survival signaling (Hashimoto et al., 2001)
- Rodent models of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury showed that Humanin treatment significantly reduced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and infarct size, with associated improvements in cardiac function and reduced oxidative stress markers (Thummasorn et al., 2011)
- Metabolic studies in aged mice demonstrated that Humanin administration improved insulin sensitivity, reduced hepatic lipid accumulation, and attenuated markers of systemic inflammation, implicating NNMT and mitochondrial signaling in age-associated metabolic dysfunction (Muzumdar et al., 2009)
